Contractors and Professionals

Our Trades Directory has been created in response to one of the most common questions we are asked after completing a survey: “Can you provide contact details of local trades?”.  We never accept payment or referral commissions, so every recommendation is based solely on our past experience.

The businesses listed are independent of Witcombe Surveyors. We do not recommend businesses, and their inclusion is based on my previous experience or client feedback, but it is not a guarantee of future workmanship. Clients should obtain quotations and check qualifications, insurance, availability and suitability before instructing anyone.

Roofers

Coastal and exposed properties in East Sussex & Kent often require regular roof maintenance work.

ROOFER

T M Roofing

Tom McShane and his team have carried out several projects for my clients over the years, including full re-roofing projects, leadwork and replacing large flat roofs. Their projects have also included the prestigious National Trust-owned Ightham Mote, replacing handmade clay tiles in Hastings Old Town and parapet improvements.

ROOFER

Clarke Roofing

Clarke Roofing are a long-established larger firm in Eastbourne. They regularly undertake larger roofing projects, including specialist roofing with copper and zinc on heritage buildings throughout East Sussex and Kent. Clarke installed a tapered insulated flat roof system to a large block of flats in Eastbourne, following my defect inspection highlighting major concerns.

Builders

Selecting the right builder is very important for older houses to ensure the correct materials are used and Planning & Building Regulations Approvals are obtained where needed

Builders

Bob Parsons Building & Roofing

Bob and his team, which includes his sons, have carried out several projects for my clients over the years, including roofing repairs, chimney rebuilds, repointing and rendering. Bob Parsons Building and Roofing have also installed bi-fold doors and constructed a concrete beam and block patio at my own house.

Builders

Vertex Construction

Vertex Construction have undertaken many extension and renovation projects on large countryside houses. They constructed a large garage and workshop for a mutual client following me obtaining planning and building regulations approvals.

Plasterers

It is important that plasterers use appropriate materials on heritage properties, such as lime plaster and render to to prevent dampness becoming trapped in solid walls, before affecting internal timber.

PLASTERERS

Bourne Plastering

Dan Bourne enjoys working on heritage properties with lime plaster and render. Often called in to correct other companies’ work, his team have undertaken lime plastering and rendering for our mutual clients in Hastings, Rye and Tenterden areas. His recent work has included advising and undertaking building conservation-minded alterations to a church conversion.

PLASTERERS

Joseph Stokes & Son

Joseph has undertaken work for many of my clients in the past with plastering and smaller building work. This also included skim coating my office garage conversion. Based in St Leonards-on-Sea, he also works in neighbouring towns such as Bexhill and Robertsbridge.

Structural Engineers

I sometimes refer my clients to structural engineers for when structural repairs require structural calculations.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS

HT Partnership LLP

I have worked with Steve Harkness for nearly 20 years, recommending him for further advice, design and structural calculations following my building surveys or for project work. We have worked on projects including strengthening a Grade II Listed Mediaeval Crown Post roof structure, rebuilding the top floor of a block of flats following a fire, and the design and construction of a very tall retaining wall. Based around the Lewes area but also covering East Sussex.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS

EAR Sheppard

A long-established firm of structural engineers. EAR Sheppard has assisted my clients for many years, including designing beams for extensions and removing partitions in 1930s houses around the Bexhill area. Recently acquired by Woodmans, they now form part of a larger firm offering additional services.

Flooring

Contractors who can assist restoring and replacing flooring within period property.

FLOORING

Academy Wood Flooring

After spending an entire week sanding and finishing the floorboards in a single room in my last house, a three-story Victorian townhouse near Alexandra Park, Hastings, I decided to bring in the experts. Academy’s knowledge and specialist equipment meant they completed all the other rooms in the house in less time than I did a single room. I was delighted with the results.

FLOORING

Rhodes Carpets

Kevin Rhodes and his team have provided carpets, vinyl and LVT at my last three houses in Ore, Hastings and St Leonards. They also undertake much larger projects for office blocks, care homes and hospitals throughout East Sussex and Kent. I have always been impressed with the quality of their flooring and workmanship, they have also been willing to return to site to accommodate other trades.

Landscaping

Contractors to repair or replace retaining walls, which are a common feature around Hastings; build garden rooms and driveways.

LANDSCAPING

T F Landscaping

Tom Freeman has completed several projects for my clients, including full garden redesigns, replacing retaining walls and constructing garden outbuildings near Tenterden, Kent.

He also assisted me with my own garden project in St Leonards, shifting tonnes of earth to provide a flat base for a garden cabin and outdoor kitchen. He cleverly spread the earth to level the rest of the lawn, saving sods of grass mixed with seeding to avoid an obvious difference between the old and new areas of grass.

LANDSCAPING

Help Around The House

Lizzie transforms overgrown gardens, carrying out the back-breaking work to rejuvenate patios and flower beds. Also carrying out jet washing and basic DIY tasks in the Hastings, St Leonards and Bexhill areas. Lizzie attended a course with Aicha Witcombe on how to reuse pallets for garden projects and has also helped us tackle deep-rooted weeds in our own retaining walls and driveways.

Drainage

Drainage specialists can report on unseen areas of drainage pipes and quote for repairs on mains and private systems.

DRAINAGE

MOODY SEWAGE

David has worked with the owner, Jeremy Hall for nearly twenty years. We have worked together on several investigations and drainage system replacements, including a CCTV inspection next to Lewes Castle, a full replacement of a sewage treatment plant serving two farmhouses near Uckfield, and a filtration system in Sevenoaks. I often recommend my clients commission Moody to undertake a test and inspection, where there is no mains drainage, to ensure the system is not polluting and complies with the latest regulations. This avoids expensive replacements being needed once they own a property.

DRAINAGE

Clearways Environmental

Ben Greenway runs Clearways Environmental Limited undertaking drainage CCTV inspections and clearing blocked drains. Ben recently carried out a CCTV inspection for a mutual client, near Battle, East Sussex, where I had concerns that a leaking drain could have led to movement of a nearby wall. Ben found some areas of minor damage and arranged for the repair to be undertaken to stop water soaking into the subsoil.

Electricians

If a property does not have a valid electrical certificate, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is often recommended.

ELECTRICIAN

Electrify U

Christian Olivier has completed many projects for my clients over the years, including converting two flats back to one house in Eastbourne, carefully running wiring through a listed building in Hastings Old Town; and assisting kitchen fitters.

Christian has also run armoured electrical and internet cables and installed external electrical fittings in my own garden.

Poultons also replaced the wall ties in my 1927 house.

Asbestos and Fire Safety

Asbestos and fire safety specialists to undertake asbestos inspections, tests and removals; and fire risk assessments.

ASBESTOS AND FIRE SAFETY

Summit Environmental

I first met Mark Elwell when we were both inspecting a pub planned for re-development. I was carrying out a Level 3 Building Survey whilst he was undertaking an asbestos inspection. I was impressed with his report and have referred clients to Mark ever since. This work has included the removal of damaged asbestos lagging in a Listed house near East Grinstead; arranging the removal of asbestos cement garage roofs, and providing a report on a house in Lewes to warn the contractors of where asbestos could be present. I have always been impressed with surveys David has carried out for my clients because of how thorough and detailed his reports are – leaving no stone unturned. David is always so approachable and goes the extra mile, particularly if a client has a specific query. David's reports are bespoke with a number of photographs demonstrating each of his points. I have known clients to be reluctant as to whether to incur the expense of having a survey carried out, but are grateful they did as David's reports have uncovered instances of subsidence or chimney defects which wouldn't have been obvious upon inspection by an untrained eye. They were then able to make an informed decision as to whether or not to proceed and negotiated a price reduction. Had this not been identified by David then they may have ended up with an unexpected and significant bill to carry out such works and may have experienced problems marketing the property for future sale. I cannot emphasise how important it is to have a survey carried out on a property but more particularly so with David Witcombe who is, in my opinion, the best there is in the business!

Thank you Darrell, I was very impressed with your work and negotiation in getting the drains repaired.
Having had a meeting with David from Witcombe surveyors and subsequent discussions about the detail and thoroughness of their surveys I can categorically state that they are in my opinion the most thorough building surveyors we have ever dealt with and have a fantastic knowledge of traditional buildings, certainly we would not look anywhere else.

We instructed David to carry out a full property survey of our Grade II listed, flint barn house. We knew there would be lots of remedial work identified, as the property has been neglected, and we wanted to ensure that the report was as thorough as possible. We'd heard good things about Witcombe Surveying, so we decided to instruct them to survey the property. David's work was astonishingly detailed, and his report has been enormously helpful to us, not just in the purchasing process but also as we plan our repairs and updates to the property. He is clearly an incredibly experienced and thorough surveyor, and he really goes the extra mile too - he spent time with us on the phone both pre- and post- the survey, which was so helpful to us during a somewhat stressful time! I cannot recommend David's company more highly.

Witcombe surveyors have been fantastic providing me with my survey, the home buyers survey I received was incredibly detailed. Their knowledge and professionalism is unparalleled.

I run a roofing company and I often come across David's surveys when clients ask us to quote for work highlighted by David. David's surveys are exceptionally descriptive and I can often quote work from the survey directly without seeing the property.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Witcombe Surveying and Conservation to home buyers in the future, David is a exceptional surveyor and provides an excellent service.

House purchase - full structural survey

As probably your single largest investment in life, it's important to know all you can about your potential new home. As a result we cannot recommend David Witcombe of Witcombe Surveying and Conservation enough. His obvious experience and wealth of knowledge produced an extremely comprehensive and detailed report (more than we expected), which you can easily understand. The report really opens your eyes to all issues (large or small), allowing you to make a fully informed decision. Not only that, David is keen to discuss any issues and help you find realistic solutions. The survey report has been invaluable in our purchase process - which hasn't concluded yet ! We are very appreciative of David's continued assistance in our journey. We would definitely recommend Witcombe Surveying and Conservation. Again, our thanks.
